How the days actually run
Written the way we would plan it, including the travel days nobody puts in a brochure.

Day 1
Arrive Nairobi
Overnight in the city or in Karen.

Days 2–4
Samburu — three nights
Fly north into the drylands. Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, oryx and Somali ostrich — five species you will not see later in the trip — plus elephant and leopard along the Ewaso Ng’iro.
Very few vehicles. This is the leg people are most surprised by.

Days 5–7
Laikipia — three nights
A short hop south onto the plateau. Walk with an armed guide, ride if you can, drive at night, and see rhino. The change of activity after three days of game drives is the point.
Cool, high and comfortable in the middle of the day.

Days 8–9
Rift Valley — two nights
Down to Lake Nakuru or Naivasha. Rhino in fever tree forest, hippo on the lake, and walking at Hell’s Gate or on Crescent Island — the only real walking most Kenya itineraries include outside the conservancies.

Days 10–12
Masai Mara — three nights
The grassland finale. After a week of drier, tougher country the sheer density of animals on the Mara lands differently than it would on day two.
In migration season, four nights here is worth stealing from elsewhere.

Days 13–14
Coast, or home
Either fly to the coast for three or four nights and make it a seventeen-day trip, or fly Mara to Nairobi and connect home the same evening.
If you can spare the days, take the beach. Two weeks of dawn starts deserve an ending.
