Masai Mara

Kenya’s headline reserve and the southern end of the migration. Also the place where the difference between the reserve and the conservancies matters most.

Amboseli

Big-tusked elephant herds on open pans, with Kilimanjaro behind them on the mornings the mountain shows itself.

Meru

Green, well-watered and almost empty of visitors — the park where Elsa the lioness was released, and still Kenya’s best-kept secret.

Also worth knowing about

These do not usually anchor a trip on their own, but several of them slot neatly into a route or fill a spare day.

PlaceWhy it might earn a day
Nairobi National ParkRhino and lion with the city skyline behind them. A genuine park, 20 minutes from the centre — perfect for a morning before an afternoon flight.
Lake NaivashaFreshwater lake, hippo, boat trips and walking on Crescent Island. Usually paired with Nakuru or used as a first night out of Nairobi.
Hell’s Gate National ParkWalk and cycle among plains game, with gorges to hike. Almost no dangerous game, which is exactly the point.
Aberdare National ParkHigh moorland and forest, waterfalls and the tree-hotel tradition of watching a floodlit waterhole all night.
Mount KenyaTrekking rather than safari, with Point Lenana reachable by fit walkers in three to four days.
Lake BogoriaHot springs and, in recent years, the most reliable flamingo numbers in the Rift Valley chain.

How many parks should you include?

Two in a week. Three in ten days. Four only if you have a fortnight. Every move between parks costs half a day at minimum plus a flight or a long drive, and the most common regret we hear is not "we should have seen more places" — it is "we barely stopped".
