Why go
Ol Pejeta does something unusual: it runs as a conservancy and a cattle ranch at the same time, and the livestock helps fund the wildlife. It holds the largest black rhino population in East Africa, and at the time of writing the world’s last two northern white rhinos live here under permanent armed guard.
It is also the easiest serious wildlife area to reach from Nairobi by road, which makes it the obvious choice when you have two or three days rather than a fortnight.
Rhino, and what a conservancy fee pays for
Seeing rhino here is close to reliable rather than lucky, which is not true in most of Kenya. Both black and white rhino are present, and the conservancy is open about the cost of protecting them — the fee you pay goes into anti-poaching, monitoring and community programmes in the surrounding area.
If your children have asked why rhinos are in trouble, this is the place the answer becomes concrete rather than abstract.
The chimpanzee sanctuary
Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, within the conservancy, takes in chimpanzees rescued from the black market and from conflict zones. Chimpanzees are not native to Kenya, so this is a sanctuary rather than a wild population, and it is presented that way. It is a worthwhile hour and children generally find it the highlight.
Fitting Ol Pejeta into a route
Two nights is right. It works beautifully as the first stop out of Nairobi before flying on to the Mara, or as a stop on the drive north to Samburu. It is also the best short-notice option in Kenya: if you have three spare days at the end of a work trip, this is where they should go.

Can I see the last northern white rhinos?
They live in a guarded enclosure within the conservancy and access is managed and limited. Arrangements change; we will tell you what is currently possible rather than promising an encounter.
Is Ol Pejeta good for a first safari?
For a short first safari, yes — the access is easy, rhino sightings are close to dependable, and night drives and walking are allowed. For a longer trip it is a strong two-night opener rather than the main event.
